The sun still came up, so it is not the end of the world, says the Taranaki Daily News.
However, the grandparents of our fond memories – if they get the chance to peek at the last month of 2004 – might have trouble believing their old eyes. Smoking in pubs is illegal.
And the race is on for the first two gay men and two lesbian women who will, effectively, be able to call themselves married.

Parliament tonight voted against holding a referendum on the Civil Union Bill, which is expected to pass its final stage tomorrow.
MPs voted 68-51 to defeat a New Zealand First amendment that would have meant the bill could not be enacted unless it gained majority support at a referendum held at the same time as the next general election.

The Civil Unions Bill has been passed by Parliament.
From April 26 next year couples can commit themselves to the new civil union.
Parliament voted 65-55 to pass the controversial legislation which has polarised opinion and split political parties.
