The Foundation today expressed concern that one of its inclusiveness posters was misused by the church in an advertisement published in the Southland Times on Saturday September 10. The church used only part of the poster to claim it as evidence of gay relationships being promoted in schools and raised the question of why young people in New Zealand were committing suicide.
“The church says the poster is evidence of a “morally bankrupt” Government,” says NZAF Executive Director Rachael Le Mesurier. “The NZAF, however, questions the morality of an organisation that campaigns against a sound, research-based, public health measure aimed at decreasing bullying, social isolation, and self-harm behaviours.”

Call for new queer approach at schools -

A gay rights spokeswoman says many schools should be doing more to ensure the safety and well-being of gay students and teachers.
Sarah Helm from Out There says safety in schools for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people is one of the next big issues facing the queer community.

A place to feel comfortable -

Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender young people will have a place to feel comfortable at a youth camp during Anzac weekend.
The Takataapui Youth Camp, organised by Northland Health, Sexual Health, Aids Foundation, Rainbow Youth and the New Zealand Police, takes place from Friday April 22 to Monday April 25.

Conference seeks end to bullying of non heterosexual youth and staff in schools -

A campaign to make schools safe for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students and teachers will be launched at a national conference in Wellington, June 11 and 12, 2005.
The campaign, Safety in Schools for Queers* (SS4Q), is an initiative that has brought together a number of prominent organisations and individuals including: The New Zealand AIDS Foundation, Rainbow Youth, the Human Rights Commission, the Post Primary Teachers’ Association, Out There and the Family Planning Association.

‘Non-Heterosexual Youth, a profile of their health and well-being’ -

A new study shows 9 percent of non-heterosexual students do not feel safe at school, with a further 25 percent feeling safe only ‘sometimes’.
Youth organisation Out There said the information was taken from an analysis of non-heterosexual respondents’ data in the Youth 2000 survey, which covered 114 schools.
