Wellington Lesbian Ball, 9th December ... The Party of the year - 10-Dec-1995
Hundreds of gorgeous women from all over the country converged on the Wellington town hall on Saturday night for a most splendid ball. We were greeted at the door with red or white carnation buttonholes and dance cards! Inside the hall, a big crowd dancing and partying ... teenagers to octogenarians ... tuxes, miles of chiffon, glitter, silk boxers and tall boots, restoration wigs, brocade waistcoats over black singlets, top hats and cute 50's cocktail-hour hats, butches in slinky black numbers split to the waist. There was also a special celebration - the local lesbian community's most senior couple leading out a waltz after one had been presented with flowers and a cake for her 80th birthday.
And there was music - the Virgin Marys came out in a misty swirl of Gregorian chant, in costumes from a wild Shakespearian fantasy. The drummer picked up her sticks - and mesmerised 500 women. Then they set us dancing dancing ... well into Sunday.
We are all grateful to Brendy, Willow, Sally, Alofa, Ann-Marie, Elizabeth, Carol and Lainey, that fine consensus of lesbians who sweated for several months organizing this very classy ball. Also the sponsors (Caspers, DOODS, Devotion Trust, Over 35's Dances and Lesbians on Campus) for their generous support.
Ellen, one rather tired but happy partier
