HERO Opening GA(Y)LA - 27-Jan-1996
Despite all reports not all of Auckland was at Opera in the Park hearing Dame Kiri sing. In fact only 300,000 people were there. A few hundred of the remaining thousands chose to go to the opening of the HERO Festival which was the NZ Premier of the feelgood American movie "To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar." The film itself was lightweight but enjoyable. The costumes however were wonderful and there was the occassional good line. The party afterwards, with excellent food and a short show, went well past midnight with those surviving moving up from the grand Civic in Queen St to Legends and Staircase in Karangahape Rd.
