Queer Asian Movies at the Asia Film Festival Aotearoa - 19-May-2005
Queer Asian Movies are taking the world by storm. Recently queer Asian movies have gone mainstream and have been winning film festival awards all around the world. The Asia Film Festival Aotearoa 2005 has brought to Auckland, a most incredible lineup of queer cinema to hit New Zealand screens from 20 May to 1st June at the Academy Cinema.
The line up caters for gay woman, transgendered, transsexual, twinks and hunks and positively blows away misconceptions and stereotypes about gay Asians.

Beautiful Boxer (Thailand) - A real life dramatization of a champion kick-boxer who fights to save enough money so he can have a gender reassignation to become a woman. Box office favourite and festival winner in Thailand including Best Actor

Saving Face (USA) - A beautiful Chinese American woman falls in love..with another beautiful Asian American woman. A Sundance Film Festival 2005 favourite. A sexy sassy story about two gorgeous women in a film picked up by Sony for world wide cinematic release. Joan Chen (The Last Emperor, Twin Peaks) also features.

Splendid Float (Taiwan) - A drag artiste who is a Taoist priest in the day. he is called to summon the soul of his lover after he drowns in the sea. Winner of the best Taiwanese Film and Best New Performer in Taiwan

Bukak Api (Malaysia). - A brave Malaysian film about the trails and tribulations of drag queens and sex workers in the Muslim country, Malaysia and the Aids crisis.

Formula 17 - A beautiful love story about two gorgeous Asian hunks who fall in love with each other. The 2005 Box Office winner in Taiwan

Enter the Phoenix (Hong Kong). - Starring HK's most gorgeous hunk, Daniel Wu, this is a comedy of a gay man , who is reluctant to take over the reins of the Triad following his father, the local Mafioso head's death. A crowd pleaser.

All these films are enjoyable as well as giving both the gay and straight communities an opportunity to break through the cultural and sexual stereotypes of gay Asians. Besides which, it provides both healthy stereotypes and a feast of Asian eye candy breaking through sexual racism.
