    Christchurch Pride Week 2006 - 23-Apr-2006
Hundreds of lesbians, gay men, bisexual men and women, takatāpui, fa’afafine, and transgender are expected in Christchurch between 13 and 21 May for the second annual Christchurch Pride Week festival.

Initiated last year as a community initiative sponsored by the New Zealand AIDS Foundation, the 2006 event is expected to be every bit as popular as it was in 2005, when members of the GLBT communities came to the city from throughout New Zealand to debate, party, learn, share and promote inclusiveness, health and wellbeing.

The 2006 programme includes events as diverse as a celebrity debate – featuring Georgina Beyer, Tim Barnett, and Maryan Street who will be speaking to the topic “PC [Politically Correct] Poofter Politicians, better off without them” – to serious lectures at Canterbury University on the “queer” perspective of the classic poetry epic, Virgil’s “Aeneid”.

There’ll also be gay sports, tramps (that’s the hiking kind), parties, a “Mr and Ms Pride” competition, theatre, workshops on health, sexuality and homophobia and a host of other event

Andrew Carstairs-McCarthy (professor in Classics and Linguistics at the University of Canterbury): 'Virgil's Aeneid: a queer reader's view of a queer poet's 'straight' epic'.
The great Roman poet Virgil, a homosexual, wrote the Aeneid as a propaganda epic to please the emperor Augustus. But did he relish fulfilling Augustus's request? A queer perspective supports the view that Virgil's priorities were far different from the emperor's.

    Inqueery Event
Mary Lou Rasmussen (senior lecturer in Curriculum and Pedagogy at the Faculty of Education, Monash University, Melbourne): 'Crafting sexual identities in cyberspace'
This paper takes a look at the Pink Sofa, self-described as "the world's most popular online lesbian meeting place". In particular I am interested in the profiles the Sofa uses to introduce people to one another, and how these profiles fashion particular understandings of sexual and gendered selves. While navigating virtual cultures we are often called upon to identify ourselves in particular ways, I consider some of the effects of such textual modes of identification, recognizing that the relationship between bodies and virtual spaces is one of constant negotiation. I also draw on queer theories to argue the value of developing secondary students' critical reading practices in regard to such technologies of identification, recognizing that "our agency comes from how we accept that designated position, and the degree to which we refuse it, the way we live it out" (Grosz, 2001, 22).
