It is believed that 29-year-old Hungarian tourist Ferdinand Arbach, who was arrested over the fatal bashing, may be on the run from authorities in his homeland.
Arbach hit the headlines in Hungary for tax evasion worth millions of dollars after a fiery car crash exposed his role in an expensive motor vehicle scam.
"There's publicly available information in relation to that. We have taken that information and (are) awaiting a response from Hungarian authorities," says Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Cramer.
Police say the 23-strong investigation team is making good progress, and while a motive still eludes them, they are playing down speculation that Brown had sexual designs on the visitor.
"I have no response to that...the matter is before court and it would be irresponsible of me to discuss motive at this stage," says Cramer.
Arbach will seek bail when he appears in the Auckland District Court on Tuesday morning. ONE News understands that blood samples taken after his arrest will be used to determine whether any attempt was made to drug and stupefy him the night Brown was attacked.
Police are now waiting for a response from Interpol that may provide a lead.
