Press Release: New Zealand First Party
New Zealand First MP, Brian Donnelly, claims that Brian Tamaki has been successful in determining the vote today in the Civil Union Bill.
“I had planned to abstain,” said Mr Donnelly. “I could not vote against the bill because I agree with it. However, the loss of the amendment for a referendum meant I was not comfortable with the way in which it was to become law. An abstention vote would have been logical.
“However I also realised that the greater the margin of support for the bill in its passage, the more covert hostility and anger towards gays will be dampened down.
“I could not dispel the images of hate demonstrated by the blackshirted members of the Destiny Church. An abstention would have in a small way endorsed that intolerable behaviour.
“I therefore have no alternative but to vote for the Bill,” said Mr Donnelly.
